Nafis Umerkulova, piano
Born in Tashkent, Nafis Umerkulova started piano at the age of 5. Only a few years later she became a prize-winner in various piano competitions at home and abroad.
Nafis was the first ever musician from Uzbekistan to be awarded a full scholarship to study at the Purcell School and later at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Nafis moved to the UK in 2004 to study with William Fong and Tatiana Sarkissova. While at the RAM she was invited to participate at the Tel-Hai International Masterclasses and was among very few pianists chosen to study with Prof. Dmitri Bashkirov. This followed by distinction in Master's degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland studying with Aaron Shorr. During her studies at the RCS, Nafis won the prestigious RSC concerto competition and recorded Schubert's Sonata
D958 for the BBC TWO Schubert Documentary. Notable Masterclasses include those with Dmitri Bashkirov , Pascal Devoyon , Pascal Roge, Steven Osborne, Robert Levin and many others. Her numerous performances in
UK feature solo, concerto and chamber music recitals in Wigmore Hall, Drapers Hall, Purcell Room, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Glasgow City Halls, Manchester Bridgewater Hall, Birmingham Symphony and Town Halls.
Among various competition prizes and awards, Nafis is a winner of the Edith Steinitz Prize , 3r d prize at the International BRANT Piano Competition and a recipient of the Myre Hess award by Help Musicians UK.
Recently Nafis successfully completed the Advanced Independent Study programme at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire, studying with Deniz Gelenbe and the Advanced
Performance Diploma course at the Birmingham Conservatoire studying with John Thwaites. She was awarded scholarships at both places on the merit of her entrance auditions. Nafis also receives lessons with professor Mikhail Olenev at the Moscow Conservatory.
Since graduating from formal studies, Nafis, now as an independent artist, continues to enjoy a busy career as a soloist and a chamber musician. Recent highlights include a hugely successful Italian debut in Florence and Arezzo. In addition to her performance career, Nafis is a sought after specialist music teacher. She currently works at the London Russian Music Academy and the Purcell School.
